Nature's Rhythms
Jun 23, 2026As we approach the Autumn Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, I feel the season subtly changing, and a sense of relief in remembering that change is the natural order, just as the trees shed their leaves and the meadows of flowers go dormant and fallow.
Nature's rhythms remind me that life renews and regenerates through the process of dying back and letting go.
Still, within all the seasons of life, a mythic golden thread winds its way through the cycles of growth and dissolution, birth and death, gain and loss.
The golden thread is woven of many things ~ ancestral connections, the light of pure consciousness, our own true essence, and the recognition that we are living inside of an immense miracle from any vantage point you view it.
Some say that if we relate to life in mythic terms, we live in fantasy, but this world is a mythical realm, like something straight out of a beautiful, strange, fantastical tale.
While the rational and logical mind can be a stoic guide and helpful navigator through tumultuous terrain, mathematical computations, and inclement weather...
It is the intuitive muse and timeless oracle within that can teach us how to create beauty out of nothing or point us to where we might find gems of remembrance or hidden treasure.
Sacred drumming represents another shimmering strand among the golden threads.
The sacred drum is an instrument with the capacity to open up the human heart and mind to expanded awareness and healing states of being.
The sacred drum's capacity to transform and connect us is one of the reasons it cyclically shows up over epochs and eras and within a multitude of cross-cultural rituals.
Some believe the frame drum is an archetypal idea and an independently arising phenomenon that appears as a rhythmic inspiration inside the beating heart of its creator, similar to the hundredth monkey inventing the same precise tool as its most distant archipelago neighbor.
And how interesting that, historically, the frame drum, or sacred drum, was most often found in the hands and dominion of indigenous women, perhaps because it is most often women who rhythmically weave together in communion with the changing moon and in sync with the overarching cycles of nature.
Is all this lore of the sacred drums' mythic attributes just a poetic metaphor?
Yes, of course, yet a metaphor and more...
On the purely practical level, frame drumming just feels so deliciously good on the brain.
Here we have the hard facts and double-blind scientific data from peer-reviewed studies to prove why that would be so. Think alpha and theta brain wave production, neurogenesis, neuroplasticity, and restructured cortical motor networks for enhanced executive function and overall brain optimization.
You'll start to get the idea of the feel-good effect of drumming and rhythmic entrainment.
There is much more to say about sacred drumming, mythic threads, ancient culture, modern humans, and nature's rhythm, but that's all a story for another day.
In the meantime, come learn to play the frame drum with me from the ease of your home.
The next season of the online FRAME DRUMMING ACADEMY begins soon.
