In the ancient Mediterranean world, the frame drum is associated with the Bee Priestesses, known in Greek as the Melissa and in Hebrew as the Deborahs.

They served the Bee Goddesses. Many of the bee priestesses functioned as oracles. The drums were said to dispel negative influences and summon and dismiss the sacred bees. Women and honeybees have been in deep symbiosis for millennia.

Priestesses of the temples throughout the Mediterranean were called Melissae, meaning "the bees." Honey was medicine, ritual, and devotion.
